  • Very impressive

The book has a very interesting premise - rather than an epic tale of the destruction of the Dark Lord, we get the aftermath, with survivors on both sides trying to live with what they did and had done to them, and the ruined world around them. The characterisation is also very strong; no one is perfect, and very few completely evil. The author has a smooth, easy to read style without being sloppy. You really don't want to dwell too much on some of the atrocities that took place in that war, but he manages to describe what happened without either trivialising or wallowing in it, much as his characters are having to do. I'm fairly new to Adrian Tchaikovsky, but am very impressed to date. I can't wait for the next book in the series, and in the meantime will be checking out his back catalogue.

  • A geat world.

This book is really well written. I like the fact that it is set after what would usually be the fantasy story. The entire world recovering after a geat trauma is a grwat backdrop to the smaller, more individual tales.

  • An instant classic

This book is up there along with Le Guin's best. A insightsfull humanity, a world with depth and history, a good story.

  • Different. Very different.

If you're going to write a book about the routing of an enemy of the world and his followers, it's not often you concentrate on what happened next. The author paints the characters here in rich detail, letting them develop so their motives make sense. Yes, expect the unexpected.
