Romancing His English Rose by Catherine Hammerling, book two in the Lady Lancaster Garden Society series, is about Rose Warren and Simon Trumbell, who were betrothed as children, by their parents. Ever since Rose could talk she called Simon “Mine.” At age 10 Simon thinks five-year-old Rose is an irritant, but when he learns she is actually correct in her statement, that he is hers because of a marriage contract signed by their parents, he changes from an intelligent, obedient boy to a holy terror and later a rake as he grew up. He doesn’t want to be forced to marry Rose, someone he’s felt nothing for. Rose is an enigma. Simon thinks she is just another young woman, interested in society gossip rather than the intriguing, shy, timid, young lady she has become. When Simon and Rose are thrown together to solve a case involving his cousin and a poisoning, Simon realizes there is more to his betrothed then he thought. Seeing her in action and learning so much more about her, Simon realizes he needs to adjust his opinion of Rose and marriage as they search for clues and scientific ways to prove a death was murder. It did not take long for them to recognize that their parents just might have been correct in pairing them up for marriage; as the sparks are definitely flying. Ms. Hammerling wrote an emotional, sweet, and wonderful romance story that should not be missed. She provided a tale rich with emotions, sizzling chemistry, magnetic attraction, clever banter, and endearing characters giving Rose and Simon a chance to solve a mystery, find love, and a future together. I recommend Romancing His English Rose to other readers and look forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
