  • Sara Barefield

This book was a most excellent read. The main character's very real struggles changed a point of view I have had most of my life . Well worth the read.

  • A Powerhouse Book

Often tragic but always insightful, “Sara Barefield” tackles themes of racism, classism and abject poverty. This well-honed, character driven story offers an uncompromising look at poverty and the feelings of helplessness and shame that are sometimes a by-product of being on public assistance. Ms. Schwartz is a powerhouse writer. She has painstakingly crafted a beautiful, thoughtful tale with unimaginable depth… readers will rejoice in Sara’s amazing ability to overcome adversity, and ultimately triumph. The realistic portrayal of difficult choices combined with the many instances of hope and redemption make this a worthwhile tale. This book is a jewel, one that will stay with the reader long after the final page.

  • I couldn't put this book down

I couldn't put this book down! Sara is a true heroine. She is so decent, and her struggles so real. I cheered for her every step of the way. It's shocking what poor people have to go through in the richest country in the world.

  • Riveting Story

Sara isn’t a quitter. She does what is necessary to survive, and the reader goes on this incredible journey with her, accompanying a decent, determined woman as she wends her way through the underside of American life, fighting to achieve her dreams. You’ll cheer her on as she tells you her compelling story.

  • A great story!

This book grabbed me from the first page. The central character, Sara Barefield, is so remarkable that you'd follow her anywhere. She was dealt a bad hand from the day she was born to poor, ignorant parents, yet she succeeded in making a decent life for herself. It was logical for her to think she could climb out of poverty again when she found herself pregnant with no means of support at the age of forty. After the baby is born, Sara finds herself at the mercy of a system that seems designed to keep her trapped in poverty for the rest of her life. It's merciless, yet she doesn't quit fighting for a decent life for herself and her son. The circumstances she finds herself in, particularly in public housing, are appalling. Sara Barefield made me think about the poor in a way that I hadn't before. I am grateful for what I have and for the opportunity of reading about Sara.
