    Sara's Year Brilliant, Magical

Mark David Gerson's latest is a wonderful journey with Esther and Sarah, best friends in pre-war Montreal, as they explore what is never expected of them: the ability to choose their own destiny through education, talent, and love. The story blends the memories of Sarah (later choosing to drop the "h") as she and Esther grow into young womanhood with those of Bernie, the grown man who is Esther's son as he searches for his mother's story. What Bernie finds in Sara's story is his mother's dreams, her hopes, her talent and her spirit. Bernie learns about her disappointments and tragedy as well. Bernie and Sara both grow and change in the sharing and for the reader this journey is magic. Gerson is a master storyteller who paints pictures with his words. Weaving in the side characters of Anna Leon Owens and Anne Savage is a gift from Gerson to his readers. He does his home city of Montreal proud with the description of streets, architecture, famous and infamous locations and events. His characters became real for me....and rooted for and loved. I will miss them and I hope Gerson writes Bernie's Story soon.
