    Amazing

An alternate universe 19th century Russia that is so well written you won't find anything like it anywhere else. I work in a bookstore and the one thing I always tell customers is that this book well suck you right in without releasing you until it wants to, the characters are diverse and entertaining with so many secrets you never know what to expect.

    Simply disappointing

I have to say I had such high hopes for this series and this author as a whole, but after reading book and a half of this trilogy I was thoroughly disappointed! As a person who lives in Eastern Europe, I thought that the Russian theme, the female lead, and the fantasy theme is going to be right up my alley, but Leigh boring writing really ruined everything for me. It was disappointing from fantasy point of view, since a lot of the "supernatural" elements weren't explained very well so I couldn't really get what was going on. It wasn't up to my standards on the historical point of view, since more than once it felt like the author just described something she saw on a photo and/or read about it, and not actually seen in person nor understood what did it do (especially sad when it came to clothing or buildings since I am familiar with what she talked about but the descriptions were botched). But the most disappointing of all was the main heroine who spent almost the entire book just following orders, complaining and/or not thinking for herself. It was a whole book of how the circumstances made her do this or that. All in all I've read worse (for example her next book IS worse), but I'd definitely wouldn't give my money on this. My advice is skip this and read something more interesting.
