An Interesting Quest with Decent Writing

This book is the first part of a series and ends with a cliff hanger, so don't expect to read it and be done with the story. Parts of the book are really cool, when the characters perform actions and monsters appear that are familiar to DnD players, it feels a little bit like you're reading part of a game. There are also some whimsical things that happen that I thought were very interesting. However, some of the writing is kind of dry and I didn't find the story as compelling as "A Song of Ice and Fire", but then again the first book in that series is only OK too. I found it annoying that one character, who's supposed to be wise and use formal language, addresses people as "ye" but then says other phrases that are very modern and colloquial. That broke some illusion for me. I was also hoping to learn more about the entire DnD pantheon, but this book is mostly about two to three gods, with a few others sprinkled in the story. Perhaps the rest of the Avatar Series fleshes them out. I'm not in a rush to read them.

    One of the greats!

I've read many of the Forgotten Realms series, this book still sits as one of my favorites! Off to read the rest now!
