    Supernatural nanny who sheds

Granted, I'm not the target audience for Brainerd and Fraser's new MG suburban fantasy, Shadows of New York, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Funny, imaginative, thoroughly entertaining and charming, I rushed through the book, swept away by the characters and situations. There're werewolf nanny's, cooking oracles, leprechauns, evil shadow creatures, several different queens, Cleopatra as a zombie, more imagination going on here than in a dozen similar books. While I might take the authors to task for tempering the ending somewhat, I can certainly understand why they did it. Blood-baths aren't for MG readers and the feel-good ending brings a nice message about the nature of friendship for young readers. A minor quibble, though. Recommended for young readers and adults who appreciate a funny, rollicking, imaginative ride.
