    Super good

I love the Dragon Blood universe. While this book is a stand-alone, it would be helpful to read some of the other books in the series in order to appreciate how curmudgeonly Therrik really is! Lindsay Buroker is a star at enticing the reader to like unlikeable characters, and while the story is not exactly "Hollywood" you still walk away feeling good. I certainly hope this is not the last we hear of Therrik.

A good addition to the series

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book and was very pleasantly surprised by how much I did. Therrik has been a challenge to like through the Dragon's Blood series--and I do suggest that this book will make a little more sense if you read the rest of the series first. In the books that take place before this one, he's not very likeable, he's aggressive, and prone to violence. He has a specific role to play in the story arc and he plays it very well. With this book, though, Buroker opens a window into why he is the way he is and suddenly he's no longer the cardboard jerk he was in the other books. I don't think he'll ever be one of my favourite characters, but at least I am interested in him and in what happens to him. And that's a real testament to the quality of Buroker's writing. Lilah, who's a completely new character, was immediately likable, a little bit awkward, a lot brilliant, fond of really bad jokes, and another strong female character that I really enjoyed getting to know and I hope to hear more from her in future. I think this is a good addition to the series.

    Least favourite

I must say I bought this to see what redeeming qualities my least favourite character in the Dragon Blood series might have.......that will be none!! I even found one Zirkander that irriated me just as much as Vann...... Shame one of the dragons didn't breath on him.....
