    Addictive world-building

I’ve been a big fan of every Ellis book I’ve read so far; this one is no exception. Primary characters are Chloe and Mark, both of whom I grew to care for and even relate to, despite the fact that they’re a vampire and a shifter. Ellis does a brilliant job of giving the reader a world they can relate to on many levels, supernatural characters and all. This installment brings us romance, conflict, drama, a little violence, some heat, action, scheming, betrayal, family drama… it’s got it all. We also get subtle updates on characters we’ve met in Ellis’ other books; they all remain true to character too. The way Ellis thrives at giving them individual voices is a testament to the effort he puts into his work. More than fictional characters, they almost come off at times, as though they’re his (very real) family. He’ll insert little details that an astute reader will appreciate for the continuity, while others will simply absorb without being distracted. The romance, while the feelings come fast, manages to be real and it packs heat. The action, drama and conflict, all seem plausible, despite surrounding supernatural or ‘Veiled’ characters. This is a wonderful book to get lost in for a few hours. Hoping there’s more of this addictive world to come; strongly recommend.

    Fun breathless ride!

I thought this one was the best of the series so far! It's hard to imagine being forced into an arranged marriage, but I guess if I were a vampire in Chloe's situation, I could reason it out. And being in a marriage with a hunky shapeshifter can't be all bad. But what a whirlwind of changing situations! I loved the grittiness and spiciness - it felt authentic. Fun breathless ride!
