  • Is it over already?!

Another fast-paced, exciting Dresden story to make readers ready to believe in anything, especially Harry. As usual, foreshadowing from about 5 books ago rears its head to explain itself. One of the draws of Butcher's books is how fully immersed one can become, and being cognizant of little details that aren't fully dealt with in one book eventually reap rewards. Another draw is the completely fallible and likable Harry Dresden is. There is nothing better than having his friends basically call him a dope and allow him to realise something truly important: about himself and about his case. In what seemed like yet another crazy, impossible task, Dresden fulfills the reader's need for thrilling action and page-turning thoughts that often lead to one laughing out loud. In this book, there is no disappointment, and it is so exciting to see that there is further development afoot, for Harry as the Winter Knight, his family life, his love life, and those others he loves. Oh, and it always helps to have a new ally.... and enemies continuing to prepare for their next battle with him. I can't wait for the next book!

  • A nice variation on the formula

Butcher keeps on trucking with book 15(!) of the series. He avoids the 'level boss' trope, and keeps the characters and series on their feet by his focus on family, even or especially with the bad guys. There's one kind of odd aside about sexuality, which feels a bit like the author is defending his squeamish feelings about gay stuff. It puts me in mind of a straight friend who wants to get it, whose heart is in the right place, and who still struggles. That's fine with me. I also like how Butcher deals with faith. Though the supernatural is perfectly evidenced, the Judeo-Christian god isn't directly. Of course the Grail and other things do lend a lot more weight to that, plus angels and all, but faith matters, and that makes for a good story even for an atheist. In all, the series works because there are serious consequences and people keep changing. And of course nonstop action and a sense of humor.
