  • a dystopian dark romance

3.5 stars Spark of Madness by Brynn Ford is not for the faint hearted. This is a dystopian dark romance that doesn't stop at any limit. Raw. Depraved. Sometimes disturbing. I am confused about how I feel about this book. I am oddly intrigued with this unique story. I know every step ahead is painful and heartbreaking but I just cannot stop putting one foot in front of another. This story is set in a fictional world after a civil war. Ember Glen is ruled by the Elders and Control who say that they are running this community as per God's wishes. Men do Purging of their violence and lust on the night of full moon . A group of women & girls are marked as Servants who has only one role- serve these man. Some women are also designated for domesticated life but again, that's controlled by the Elders. Mercy Madness is a rebel and a sinner because she refuse to feel pride and pleasure in her job. So the Control has decided to put her in Trial of Dissension as punishment in three stages .That is basically death order. Her Warden and one of the Control, Arlo Rainn feels complex things for her. Lust. Repulsion. Anger. What will happen next? Please read the trigger warning. Go to the author's website to read them in full details. Because trust me, it won't be for everyone. It won't be easy. Even if you are a seasoned dark romance reader. This story talks about the fanatic toxicity of religion and the unfair rule of men over women using vile excuses. The concepts of sexism, feminism, religious culture and extremism are deeply embedded in each twist of this story. Mercy is a strong and fierce character. And I found myself cheering for her even when hopelessness and despair threatened to swallow me. She is fierce and open minded and she questions everything. And that is her greatest sin. The sadness and fear I felt for her is real. I am on the fences about Arlo. I mean it's the first book and he is still in Control mode. He has been taught to believe the elders and their ways. But Mercy imbalanced his carefully controlled world. Her fierceness tempts him. Her beauty makes him want to sin. And she is forcing him to think differently. Not completely, of course. But the seed is there. And the protectiveness and possessiveness for a sinner is putting him on edge because he should not feel everything forbidden. It is just beginning of the war. And that part, where I left Mercy at the end of the book, is going to be extremely difficult. But I cannot wait for her to rise and bring these evil people down. I reviewed an early copy voluntarily

  • A Definite Must Read!

This book was utterly fantastic and a definite must read! I fell in love with Mercy from the beginning, she’s determined and fierce. But her refusal and questioning how she was raised lands her in trouble and having to compete in the three trials. Arlo is tasked with watching over Mercy while she completes her trials and he’s finding it difficult to resist the pull he feels for her. I wasn’t sure what to make of Arlo, at times I liked him, and he infuriated me in others. The attraction and chemistry between these two is undeniable and intense. I will warn you, this is a dark dystopian romance, and not for the faint hearted, but if you like the dark, you won't be able to put this one down. That cliffhanger ending left me screaming for more, I can’t wait to see what happens next!
