    Storms and Shadows

Set in the 12th century, about the deBraose family. The story centers on the wife, Matilda as seen through the eyes of her ladys' maid. The brutality she endures throughout her life, probably typical how women were treated then. The author may have taken some "creative interpretation" with many of the historical facts throughout the story. Her life was a hard, sad, lonely existance, frightening experiences day in and day out. All in all it was a pretty good read. Caught my interest right away, I could have done away with all the brutality though, but then, you really seemed to get the grit of the dirt between your teeth as the author lays out this story.

Gripping - an undeniably good read

History with a twist. Regardless of whether or not you like history, this book stands on its own as a gripping read - full of supernatural twists and turns. A good read all round.

    A very enjoyable read.

This book was recommended by a fiend and as such is not one I would normally go for but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Whilst it deals with the subject of King John's singular persecution of the de Braose family, through the eyes of her ladies maid Ailith, it also employs a supernatural element throughout, which kept me interested on another level. I would recommend it.

Title very in line with major theme of vook

Loved the history and flow of this book, very similar in voice to Elizabeth Chadwick. Minor spelling and editing errors do interrupt flow. Matilda de Braose character very well developed; Ailith the narrator, not so much. Not exactly sure of narrator function as most of story is told from Matilda's perspective. Supernatural events or womens' wisdom could have been put to better use. A family tree at beginning would aid reader in keeping track of characters and familial relationships.
