    Deals with reasonably tough themes

This novel was a mixed experience... On the one hand, the main protagonists were admirable people surviving through fairly tough issues and trying to be themselves at a time when that was strongly discouraged by society. The author also did a good job with medical detail of the day and wrote some truly appealing scenes involving small children. On the other hand, the writing itself wasn't great - pedestrian in style (with some notable exceptions when writing with deep emotion) and frequently awkward in sentence structure (unfortunately this wasn't due to historical vernacular, but to apparently limited grammatical expertise). The author clearly has courage, being willing to address difficult topics (and posit potentially unpopular solutions to them also!) I hope she will continue to work intensively on building skill and lyricism in her writing, so that she can do her material fuller justice as she continues to create.
