  • Dark and Entertaining

I read this after watching the first season of the STARZ adaptation and while the show certainly wasn’t faithful to all the intricate details of the book, the book, per the usual, is far more entertaining. It’s dark, it’s funny and it’s thought provoking. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s a quick read but takes a dose of insight to fully appreciate. Well worth the time spent reading it and read it in the span of three days.

  • Depressing and sad!

I had this book on my wish list for quite some time and finally bought it and wished I hadn't. I found it dark and depressing from start to finish. I love novels with a restaurant background but this one turned me right off. If this is what really goes on from the kitchen to the front of house in a popular big city kitchen, I don't know how they manage to function! From little girl lost arriving in NYC to her mentor in the restaurant to the G.M. of the establishment, I would stay far away from that place. I made myself finish the book, but it was hard not to go on to something more worthwhile, it really was! 2 thumbs down from this reader.

  • Boring restuarant and boring characters

I finished this book but I did not enjoy it. The writing is good but I found the story boring. I had to put it down and read something else to finish it. I started this book because I thought I would enjoy the high end restaurant background and I did. I did not care about any of the characters. They are not just unlikable they are boring. I kept hoping something might happen but nothing really did. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review

  • Brilliant

What a delicious book; I wanted to drink in every page, savour every word. Danler's writing is exquisite and infused with poetry; there are so many beautiful sentences in this novel that took my breath away. Her story, Tess's story, is also heartbreakingly relatable. Sweetbitter will ring true to anyone who has worked in a restaurant, it will be devoured by those who love the culinary arts, but it will especially resonate with those who have ever felt (and perhaps still do feel) young and free and invincible, but also lost, directionless, and drowning in a series of bad decisions. I cannot remember the last time I was this moved by a book. I insist you read it.

  • Sweetbitter

A good coming-of-age story after "running away to a more interesting and adventurous life. Also an expose about real life behind the scenes in a highly popular NYC restaurant, the back-biting and the scheming and intrigue.
