I received an ARC of this collection from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This short story collection is comprised of stories from various authors, all centered around having female leads who take charge of their situations. Whether it is standing up for themselves or saving themselves or others from death, each story is different in its tone and overall ideas about the ideas of being a female in fantasy. I really enjoyed this collection! All of the stories were fun to read and interesting, and introduced me to authors that I had never heard about before. They were all so well written for being such short pieces, which I know from my own writing experience is hard to do. Some were hilarious, some were more somber, and some were heartwarming. There was a great mix here that lent well to the theme and presented that theme well. The idea of women in fantasies has always irked me for one reason: The women in fantasy are always revered as "someone to save" and "weak" compared to the males of the stories. This collection challenged every aspect of being a woman in fantasy in every way. From "being weak" to becoming the best fighter; from being "the damsel in distress" to taking down an entire kingdom with a witch and a sassy Scottish dragon; from being seen as "not good enough" to being more than enough and proving it; this collection hit all the marks. My only problem? I wish the stories were longer! Each short story that was in this collection felt like they were either pieces from longer works, or incredibly condensed versions of stories that could have been full-length novels. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it did leave me a little disappointed at the end of every story that I wasn't going to have more of it. Rating: 4/5 stars
