I got the first book in the series off bookbub and I loved it so much that I immediately purchased the first collection with the next two books in the series. Dragon Rose was a delightful echo of Beauty and the Beast and I loved it. The second book in the series was a bit of a disappointment, partly because I was expecting more stories based on fairy tales, which was more own somewhat unfounded expectation. The other was because the romance that grew between the characters seemed very forced to me. I think this is in part because the author talks a lot about the "passionate nature" of the female protagonist but her actions typically place her firmly on the colder, more logical side. I liked the story and the concept but I felt very distanced from the story because it felt a lot like I was being told the characters were one thing or another, sometimes even by the characters themselves, but there was little action to back it up. The third book I was most conflicted about. The romance was okay but the protagonist's sheer uselessness in a series where so far the women have been mostly clever made me angry. A character I liked died because the female idiot didn't do ANYTHING about it except exclaim over how she must wait and keep up appearances DESPITE HOW SERIOUS THE SITUATION WAS. And then somehow this horrible, aweful situation was literally fixed in SECONDS and primarily by the man. While I am not against couples being partners SHE COULD AND SHOULD HAVE SAVED HIM FIRST.

    fables re worked

Ms Pope draws on the classics; beauty and the beast, nursery rhymes and other legends, sets them in a wonderful medieval world of her own devising and creates intriguing love stories. Very enjoyable fantasy
