    fun read

The first novella accompanying the Baine Chronicles provides a nice peek into Sunaya's past and beginnings as an enforcer, and is full of action just like the main series. Being Roanas' trainee, Sunaya just passed her tests and became an enforcer. However, do not expect any smooth start with this wild shifter. She is assigned on her first quest, but not solo as she would like to, but together with a human girl from obviously rich family. Tracking the missing girl is a journey full of surprises and revelations that are supposed to stay hidden, and it's only on Sunaya's and Annia's shoulders to decide whether to report everything, or let the decision on those who are involved.. A very fast read with many twists, some of those unexpected, some of them not, but interesting nevertheless. Observing the first contact of Sunaya and Annia was actually pretty fun and I enjoyed much how their relationship turned to friendship. They are both strong women, independent and smart, and combining their qualities creates a very dangerous team. I loved their interactions and the way they operated in the field. Nice and quick read, and a great complement to the main series.

    Great novella!

Never having been a big fan of novellas, I went ahead and bought this prequel to the Baine Chronicles as I really enjoy them. What a great glimpse of Sunaya’s beginnings! I loved how she isn’t quite as self-assured as she is now and a little more hot-headed, as most people are different when they are younger. The novella also shows us how some of the main characters in the series met Sunaya and became a part of her circle of friends. I think this gives all of them a little more depth and helps to understand them a little bit more. The story was great, as well, and is well-written as all of Ms. Walt’s books generally are. The end really surprised me, making me both sad and happy with the way things turned out. How can I be both? You’ll have to read the novella to find out! I am really looking forward to more novellas to see the origins of the friendships that came to be. If you are a fan of the series, you really need to pick this up because, as I already said, I believe this novella adds a tiny bit more depth the characters in it. If you haven’t tried the series yet, now is a good time. Highly recommend!
