    Strength personified

Lori Shenher has captured the essence of strength personified in her honest, raw account of not only life on the force, but the challenge of surviving as a detective who has seen horrible things. Thank you for surviving, and for sharing this important story.

    That lonely section of hell

I would like to say this book is an incredible read, most books only explain the story of the killer and not about the people that hunt them and the frustration and politics that go with it.

True crime through a human lens

It is never easy to read about real life tragedy, especially real life failures of systems we want to be able to trust. But the honesty, emotion, explanation and superb story telling ability of the author makes this a book I would highly recommend. If we do not learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. As a front line worker, I appreciated the personal story alongside the “facts of the case” story. We so often erase our own suffering, and we should acknowledge and honour it in the same ways we do the work. Well done!

    Shame, on so many levels

This book is a sad recounting of the errors and omissions made by several different police agencies that led to more marginal women being murdered on the pig farm. The author does an amazing job of telling the story, mostly in a removed, this-is-what-happened way, but he does comment often about the mistakes the superior officers made, and lack of support for the investigation. Sometimes you read a true crime book and are so happy that a really good cop or cops figured things out in time to save lives, and other times, like this example, you feel the same frustration the author must have felt when the cops fail to act. This author is not the only one involved in this insane case who tried and failed to get those who could have acted to do so. Living close to Vancouver, I heard many stories over the years from other officers or experts, who were interviewed on the radio or tv, who just looked and sounded ragged with grief when they recalled the road blocks along the way to charging Robert Pickton with several murders. You like to think the cops have your back, but so often it's up to one person who's own biases or opinions cloud their ability to make the right call. I do hope that Lorimer Shenher has recovered from this disastrous episode in his life.
