    The academy - introductions

I have read all the academy books and I really enjoyed them all. A delightful little romance with a touch of mystery.

Compelling, can't wait to read more

Anyone who knows me is aware of the fact that (normally) I only read science fiction and fantasy. And to be honest, the description of this book sounded like it might be science fictiony. In a way, it isn't, and in a way, it is. If you're and old-school SF fan, you're probably read some of the works of a guy named Larry Niven. Now Niven is not particularly great at writing craftsmanship - secondary characters, especially women, can be a bit flat, sometimes even one dimensional. What he is good at is creating interesting ideas. Science fiction is frequently called "The literature of ideas", and Larry Niven proved, in his short story, "The Deadlier Weapon", that a story doesn't even have to be science fiction to have compelling ideas. Introductions, and the series that follows (still reading) are probably more for older teens and above. The story is slow building - Introductions covers just a couple of weeks or so of story time, but in greater than normal detail. Most of the important characters are teens. The story contains a number of long-running/slow developing mysteries that are compelling in and of themselves. The thing that really keeps me turning the pages, though, is the main characters and the developing relationships between them. I can't wait to read more!
