  • Gripping and heartbreaking at turns

This trilogy reads like a cross between Swordspoint (Ellen Kushner), Cabaret, and The Spy who Came in From the Cold. The first book is tonally very like TSWCIFTC, and Cyril is a very Le Carre-esque protagonist. The characters are wonderfully real, and their decisions aren't always right and they often suffer the consequences. They all operate in a very morally grey area, occasionally choosing to work with terrible people in order to further their own (often Good) ends. She creates a world that's just as messy as the real one (unsurprising, as it's basically fictionalized Germany from 1935-48 or so).

    Thanks for your feedback!
