    Secrets and Lies

The Betrayal is a suspense story of love and hate, secrets and lies. Nadine and Jake's marriage is on the rocks - can it be saved? Jake flies to New York on business and runs into a very old estranged friend of Nadine, Karin. Karin seems to be one for chance meetings; well that's how she met Nadine. A chance meeting in a changing room when they were trying on school uniform for their first year at secondary school. They became best friends but one summer it turns sour. Why did they fall out? Why doesn't Jake tell Nadine he's met Karin? Only reading this book will you find out the whole truth! The narrative alternates between Nadine and Jake. With each chapter the story unfolds and we find out more about both Nadine and Karin's history and the present goings-on. To what lengths is Karin prepared to go? Yes she is a nut job who is determined to get what she wants. But what does she want? This book is excellently written, I couldn't put it down wanting to know what sociopath Karin is going to do next. I loved the way the historical events are drip fed through Nadine's memories. It's the first Laura Elliot book I've read but it's not going to be the last. I know I've got Fragile Lies waiting so that's going to read sooner rather than later! Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me this book to read and review.

    Excellent read

I thought the writing was amazing and the plot was well thought out. I was anticipating more towards the ending but it concluded nicely.

    Okay novel

This was an okay read. The suspense was not gripping but there was some tension. The characters were a bit devoid of emotion which made it hard to connect with them. I predicted how it would end quite early in the story.
