  • The bookshop on the Shore

Nice easy read. Very predictable story. A bit boring.

  • A very good read.

I really enjoyed this book - the setting, the characters, and even the weather!

  • Great Read!

Very nice story to read when you are down and out since the main character goes through a lot of adversity in her life but has a survivor's perspective on life . Great story line, good characters, story keeps you going until the end.

  • Disappointing after a fantastic first book

I really really wanted to like this. But I came so close to quitting about 48% of the way through. It wasn't for lack of action, there was plenty of things happening, but I couldn't really connect with the plot. I absolutely loved Nina in the first book, so I was a bit disappointed when I felt her character changed for the worst. Then the Jane Eyre riff was just too much. I've always found that a creepy story, and I just don't feel like it was done well here. I didn't see any build up to the relationship between Ramsey and Zoe, and would have been fine if no relationship had happened, since it felt too awkward. However, the kids were absolutely precious and it made me so happy to read about their lives. Patrick and Harry were the perfect balm on all of the awkward plot lines!

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • A somewhat Gothic modern love story

Third reading: Upgraded to 4 stars. Not sure why I had such a negative reaction previously but I (to quote Patrick) absolutely 😁loved it!!!! Second reading update: I've downgraded this to 2 stars both of which are for the lovely parts about Nina, Lennox, and Surinder. The rest of the story was OK but I found it hard to like or relate to the main characters and found myself judging them a lot. I mean, we all make mistakes... sometimes really big, stupid mistakes... but the combination of supposedly responsible adults not using contraception and neglecting their children was too much for me and I just didn't really care what happened to them. So I still admire Colgan for writing a somewhat Gothic story but really hope and pray that her next book is about Joel, Flora, Saif, and Lorna who I truly love to read about and want to know what happens next. First reading: 3 stars. I love Jenny Colgan and really admire her willingness to write a book with a different feel to it than her prior ones. I was very pleased that there was much less profanity, no explicit sex scenes, or politics in this book which was nice. That said, reading this book wasn’t the intense and joyous experience of her “Mure” series for me.

    Thanks for your feedback!
