  • Sexy SciFi with a twist

It's hard to describe this book. It's part hot romance, part science fiction/alternate universe with elements of renaissance Italy with powerful families controlling everything. I totally need to find out what happens next with Lucius and Lilian.

I felt such sadness for Lillian and her family and the choices she had to make for her survival. I understood how their society worked, but it was still jarring to know that women had to sleep with men who cared nothing for them. Therefore, it was hard for me to like Lucius, but at the same time, I was interested to see where Lillian and Lucius's relationship was going to end up. Not only was their relationship interesting but the other characters that Lillian came in contact with were interesting too. I was mad that Lucius had a good marriage with Estella or at least that's how it appears to be. I kept thinking why engage in a relationship with Lillian? Why use her just to satisfy a need? I also struggled to read this because it dragged at times, and I think the author overloaded us with information about the Twelve Systems that could have been explained throughout the series. With Lillian constantly reciting things in her head and her mantras, it was a bit annoying. I would give this book 2.5 stars, but I'm going to give it 3 because I'm intrigued enough to read the next book in the series.

    Thanks for your feedback!
