  • Best aliens ever.

I'm afraid I can't explain the review title without spoilers. You'll have to use your imagination. The world built in this novel is an amazing accomplishment. It's not a world I want to visit, but the possibility of life evolving and human life being possible on a tideally locked planet is a fascinating concept. The characters never stand still, but every change makes perfect sense. I loved the book.

  • Struggle for survival on tide-locked planet

Innovative setting of a tide-locked world where human colonists are struggling to survive. This sort of thing would normally be my jam, but I didn't really click with any of the characters, and thus didn't feel invested in their struggle. I'd rate it a 3.5, but not quite a 4 for me.

  • Interesting premise, but not fully developed.

A lot of thought--and angst--has been put into the main characters, but sometimes they just don't feel like their principles, or basic natures, or motivations in various scenes, actually fit who they are supposed to be. It's a bit difficult to follow the individuals' emotions while trying to learn the context of the interesting and complex society and ecology in which they act and react. The hard science has been left a little vague, which would be fine if it weren't so intriguing, and the social examinations both draw you in and tire you out. There is a slight feeling that more backstory would have helped, and that the characters would have developed more fully if their interactions and turmoil took place more in the dynamic parts of the story than in the self-examinations afterward. Overall, I was intrigued, but came away feeling unfulfilled.

  • Great start then seemed to fizzle

I was utterly hooked by the stories of Sophie and Mouth. I haven't been so sucked into a story in a very long time. The world building was unique and captivating. But then it just fizzled at the end and slowed to the point that I started skimming. This book, early on, was an easy five stars, then the climax hit and instead of becoming more exciting it descended into long-winded descriptions which is why I am giving it three stars.
