  • Surprisingly Addicting!

While I was into the book almost right away, there are a lot of tribes, characters, and political nuances that can become easily confused. At times I had to read sections carefully or over again just to keep some of the characters and their alliances straight. However, the story was so engrossing that I didn't mind. The characters are very entertaining with a strong female lead. I don't read a lot of fantasy, but a story centred in the Middle East was refreshing and helped lend some of the intrigue to this fantastic start of the trilogy. The cliffhanger ending left me a little unsatisfied (I really wanted to know what happened next!) but I am hooked! This book is hard to put down and I can't wait to read the next instalment! Definitely worth 4.5 stars instead of just 4 :)

  • deserves your complete attention

It took me by surprise, got intensely involved with her characters, and cannot wait for the intrigue, plots, and betrayals to continue in the future books.

  • Not bad

Interesting and novel plot. Hard to invest in characters as most are back and forth in emotional extremes and not overly likeable. If you can stick with it, it’s in a descriptive setting and has a complex story line.

  • Fantastic Setting! Confusing Names!

The setting and fantasy world building are exceptional in this work. It's great to read a fantasy book that is created with middle-eastern philosophy, history, artifacts and culture as opposed to the typical English countryside sort of thing. Very long tale, and most chapters have great action beats throughout. I did find all the nomenclature for religions and groups frustrating at times, and I'm an avid sci-fi/fantasy reader, so that speaks to the complexity of the history the author has created. Take that as you will, it was both enjoyable and, at times, frustrating. The two main characters have interesting story arcs through the book. They both develop and change their ways as events unfold around them, and we are presented with valid reasons for their actions in most scenarios. I did feel Dara's character a bit one sided and not particularly interesting, but that also fits with his background story as well. Overall an excellent read, although I found some parts dragged a bit (for my own taste). I would have preferred this story to have been about 100 pages shorter by trimming out some of the journey to the City of Brass, and maybe slightly simplifying some of the politics going on once there. Something about the confusing names of groups of people and concepts combined with complex political motivations makes some sections a bit of a slog. That said, I would recommend this to any fantasy fan looking for a change in setting, and a bit of a challenging read.
