  • Completely Unique and Addictive!

I knew only a little going into this story, but N. K. Jemisin is a master at her craft, so I was happy to go in with nothing but my imagination. And thankfully I did because I've never read anything like this before. The concept is wholly original and expertly told with Jemisin's stunning voice. Add to this the unique characters, the creativity, and the powerful message, and this is one of the best books I've read this year! Everything about it fascinated me. Each character had a powerful, compelling personality, and I can't really tell who my favourite is (maybe not Aislyn, but I understood her, and she was a highly sympathetic person). There were some intense moments with over the top action and danger. The villain, while never physically and aggressively threatening, left a lasting impression. The plot and story were cleverly woven into the message of the book, and that message was never shied away from. There were some truly vile moments by antagonists that had me cringing. Even with those stomach churning moments, I always felt compelled to keep reading. I truly hope this is the start of a great series because I would love to see it continued. This is a book for anyone with an open mind about fantasy, horror, and biting political commentary. I loved it!

  • A story for our times.

Brilliant! NK Jemisin at her best. Powerful and raw characters who personify New York City, while combating issues such a racism, white privilege and police brutality.

  • A Wonderful Love Letter to New York

I absolutely loved the premise of this book, and once again N.K. Jemisin has created such a unique vision that I want to just keep exploring the world and her characters and never leave. I can't wait to read more in the series!

  • Nahh

All whities bad. All POCs good or victims. Gets tedious after a while. Plus the characters are too stereotypical to make them anything more than cartoony. Interesting concept though. Too bad about the heavyhanded bigotry.
