  • Loved It!!

If you are a fan of Sarah J. Maas, this book has to be on your list of most anticipated 2018 releases! The Cruel Prince was very well written and such a compelling story that you will not be able to put the book down. This is my first Holly Black book and lets say I was not disappointed. I was immediately drawn into the story as well as loving all the characters. This book will be one of your favourite books of the year! Jude is only seven when her parents are murdered. Along with her two sisters she is now living in the High Court of Faerie. The book begins ten years after where the fey despise humans. Then we meet Prince Cardan, the wickedest son of all of the High King's sons. I really enjoyed seeing the way both Jude and Cardan both interacted throughout the book. But he was definitely cruel to Jude throughout most of the book. He can definitely not be trusted...... or not. Holly Black is well known for writing fantasy featuring faeries. It had a bit of everything like action, drama, romance (you will see!) and tons of surprises that will make you want to throw the book across the room. The ending will not disappoint you, but it will leave you wishing you had the second book in your hands! If you are looking for a great fantasy this is the perfect book for you to start!

  • Fantastic Setting, But Not Sold On MC's

I finally gave in to the hype train! I am definitely glad to have read this book, though I did have a couple gripes with it. But the good stuff first! Holly Black has an amazing writing style and voice. It's quite fantastical and adds to her truly excellent world building. I love how she committed to the lore of the Fae and crafted them into truly beautiful monsters. This is a world I could read about all day, but would never want to experience first hand. It's not exactly a friendly place. The story is a little slow, but it is nonetheless packed with some great twists, an open ending, and deeply complex relationships. There is LOTS of drama in the book, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out in future books. As for the characters, I will confess they are unique and true to their natures. I love Vivi and while I dislike him as a person, I cannot deny that Madoc is quite compelling and a layered character. Taryn became a little too naieve for me, though I would like to see her grow a bit more. As for Jude and Cardan... I was not fond of them. Jude made some truly terrible decisions that did and will continue to backfire horribly, and Cardan did not have any redeeming qualities. That is not to say I hate them or that I could not understand where they were coming from, I simply could not see past their glaring flaws. Still, all in all, I am glad that I entered this unique, dark, untrustworthy world. I am certain that things will ramp up, and look forward to seeing where the series goes from here!

  • The Cruel Prince

Oh wow. I absolutley LOVED this book. This is such lush and thrilling book that was so magnifisent that i finished within two days. for some of you that may not seem like much, but for me its impressive. i found that i wanted to eat the food they describe, wear the fantasical outfits, and just live in Faerie. Holly Black has done an exisite job and i give it six stars out of five. but, unfortunatly, there is only five stars. This was a very gripping story and fun to read. i loved everything. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I want to see what you think about it. i recommended it to my friend, and shes only on chapter five and is loving it so far. i also would like to know who the cruel prince IS. is it Cardan, Dain, Balekin, or even perhaps possibly oak? but seariously folks, READ THIS BOOK!!!

  • A good read but...

The Cruel Prince is a decent book, however if the singular thing you’re interested in is seeing Jude and Cardan banter with each other you may be better off skipping to the sequel. Most of this read just established the characters, their drive and the world they live in. I’m also sad to say I was expecting some clear reason as to why Cardan would like Jude but it wasn’t established in the first book. On a better note, The Cruel Prince is well enough written with solid personalities and enough lore and action to keep you interested. Since the ending has piqued my curiosity, on to the sequel!

  • Another Epic Story from Ms Black

I first read Tithe from Holly Black and found myself entranced. It's been a decade and a half now and her story craft hasn't faded. In fact, I think I'll go back and read Tithe now because my heart has missed Kaye. But I've missed Kaye less than half as much as the author's amazing story telling. The Cruel Prince is yet another jewel in her crown and I can't wait, yet again, to read more. If you're looking for a stand alone, The Darkest Part of the Forest is awesome!
