    Tonally perfect

    Carriger doesn't put a foot wrong with the dialogue and phraseology in this one - wryly amusing and entirely consistent in tone with her related "Parasol Protectorate" series and the steampunked alt-history context she's created. Alessandro is definitely a much less likeable character than his daughter, but his portrayal here is entirely consistent with that of him in the series, nice to see. I didn't feel the motivations of the Templars & the English in relation to the events of this story were made terribly clear though, even being familiar with the rest of the subsequent series...?
