  • Having read this, and several novels by Dashiell Hammett including the Maltese Falcon and the Dain Curse, I'm now on a mission to read everything this author ever wrote. If not the best author the US has ever produced, Hammett has to be right at the top of the list. Hammett manages to achieve in his short stories what few authors can manage in a full-length book. His plot development, his imagery, his characters... are all incredibly well crafted. Hammett demonstrates an incredible understanding of human nature throughout these stories. It's impossible to read one of his stories without your imagination being set on fast-forward. The prologue should include a warning that his writings are addictive. Despite the fact that many of these stories are over 80 years old, they are in no way out of date. All that needs to be added to bring them up to date are cell phones, and computers... the stories could have been written yesterday.

    Thanks for your feedback!
