    A difficult family story

"The Dutch House" is the story of siblings Maeve and Danny, who grew up in the large "Dutch" house, which was originally owned by people of Dutch heritage. Set in suburban Philadelphia and in Manhattan, this saga begins when Maeve and Danny are quite young, living alone with their father Cyril after their mother deserted the family. After Cyril remarries Andrea , their lives become more difficult, and when Cyril dies Maeve and Danny are thrown out of the family home. The story follows Maeve and Danny's lives for decades; throughout their experiences they maintain close bonds. While this novel is a compelling read, the portrait of this family is quite depressing.

    Unforgettable

You just cannot go wrong with Ann Patchett! I thought I'd never read another book as good as Commonwealth, but she absolutely surpassed herself with The Dutch House! I was captivated from the first sentence to the last. And in between it was SO ENJOYABLE that I did not want it to end. Patchett has such an immense talent for creating characters. I feel there's something very special about an author who can create something that draws you in so completely that you cannot stop thinking about it. Her characters come to life so you feel you know them and care about them. The Dutch House was a deeply moving story about families. And I'll guarantee you this ... You will never, ever forget this book.

    Really enjoyed this Patchett

Story moved along smartly, characters were compelling and the theme of family relationships and what makes them work was engaging. A piece of compassionate writing.

    Great book

A story of families anyone can either relate to or be thankful that the families are not theirs
