a science fiction set in a futuristic earth

when i first read this book, i thought, oh just another book series about humans fighting against alien invaders. well, i was wrong. it does involve alien invaders, but is so much more. this story yanked me in and kept me on the edge of my seat. i found myself muttering to the characters in the book as if they were real and cringing at some of the decisions of the characters. that's how i knew i was hooked and was invested in learning/reading more about these characters. i met the hero, adrian stannis, a brilliant scientist who is someone whom i can relate to even though i wanted to give him a whack now and then. i felt his frustration and fears with his own government that were abusing his rights as a citizen as well as a human being. the empire dealt with issues of morality and ethics that echo with what we are experiencing even now, where the individuals rights have no meaning because the needs of the many outweigh the needs/rights of the individuals. perhaps the empire intended to help their people, but then fears/ambitions of the leaders changed their methods and policies. they used fear, torture and other methods to make everyone conform. they became the enemy within. when people feel that they have nothing left to lose, they become desperate and that's when rebellions and wars happen. the interaction of the main characters, the plot, the humor and romance create a story worth reading. i can't wait to see what else will develop in the next books.
