  • Read it to think about the big ques

In many ways this book is a psychological story with distinctly Victorian historical influences. The minister’s faith lasts through Darwin and Marx. The widow Cora is deciding what life is about. Her companion Martha is giving up a personal life for social justice. The Essex Serpent which perches over the novel is different things to different people. When the truth is discovered, only the superstitious are comforted because it’s symbolic of the end of the life where only physical monsters are to be feared. For the other characters, life goes on with the same uncertainty about the future in the Victorian era where the times are a-changing, but class, personal, gender, and personal prejudices still have to be worked out. Where will they find happiness?

  • Not Quite What I Expected

The book was quite different than what I expected. I had hoped the hunt for the Essex Serpent, or the serpent itself would play a slightly bigger role in the book than it did. The dive into the characters and relationships was interesting but by the end, not really what I had hoped to read. At the end of the day, it was well-written and will appeal to a lot of literature lovers.

  • Excellent writing.

It took a few chapters to acclimate to the writer's phrasing, but once I did, I thoroughly enjoyed the complex characters and detailed descriptions of the people and places. The book brought me to both laughter and tears and I became completely invested in the main characters. This book is mystical, historical and a little fantastical - if you don't enjoy these things, do not read it. I, for one, DO enjoy these things.
