  • X-men meets Edwardian London...

This book was an unusual blend of elements – gritty, urban historical fantasy, peppered with mysticism, and leavened with a classic kind of historical romance. Strangford is gorgeous, and makes an appearance in the first few pages, for those of you who like gothic and chivalrous heroes (and who doesn’t?), though the romance remained secondary. And the whole is rounded up with a fast-paced plot and a wounded heroine, who might be far more important than she realises... Read this if you like fantasy with a darker, gothic edge. The setting alone was fascinating: Edwardian London written with such enthralling detail and historical grounding that it felt real, despite the fantastical elements. And I loved the fantastical elements! I especially loved the characters – complex, affectionately drawn, and coming together as their own special family. I don’t want to give spoilers, but the Refuge is my kind of place. And it was great to read a book that weaves mysticism into the western historical setting, with vivid evoking of its art and practices. A rich book, and a great historical thriller.

  • Entertaining

Fun historical urban fantasy mystery/adventure/romance, although the culprit was pretty easy to guess. The characters are likable and the plot was engaging.
