Sequel Loses No Energy or Delight

Epic fantasy tales, even good ones, often take a step back on the second book. It's so hard to keep all the balls in the air, and Gilbert Stack has dozens of them in Winterhaven. It's as complex a political-social-familial scene as you get in Westeros, but unlike GRRM, Stack refuses to wholesale-murder the good guys! You get to follow Drughal, Willem, Daron, Fayre, and so many other terrific characters through even more suspense and adventure. The pacing stays taut, the situations continue to convince, and the rich depth of the world of Winterhaven shines. This review is not intended for anyone who's already read book one- you'd have to be brain dead not to be reading the sequel already! But if you've missed Winterhaven, you go and get both these books right now. Any fan of epic fantasy, spiced with military history, horror and mystery, will be doing themselves a favor.
