  • Way too unbelievable, even for fiction

I kept seeing lots of four and five star reviews for The First to Lie by Hank Phillippi Ryan, so I kept putting off writing this review, rethinking what I had read and if I really should be giving it more stars. But reviews are just one person’s opinion, so take that into account before deciding if you’ll be reading this book after reading my review. Who knows, you may end up being one of the people raving about The First to Lie. I love the concept since I enjoy reading about Big Pharma getting its comeuppance. And the way the ladies went about their investigation was very intriguing and kept me wondering if they would get caught. I had no problem going back and forth between the characters, or even into the past with other characters. I actually enjoyed the flashbacks because I thought it added great character development and another interesting layer to the story. What went wrong for me with the story was all the “secrets”. If only one character had done it and it was presented in such a way to be a cool reveal at the end, I would probably be giving The First to Lie five stars. But numerous characters did the secret numerous times and it was far too unrealistic. Now I know fiction doesn’t have to be realistic, and I love reading Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Epic Fantasy, and Sci-fi so I enjoy books with lots of imagination in them, but for a suspense novel this was way over the top. Since I try not to include spoilers, I’m not going to write more, but if you really need to know send me a message and I would love to get into a lot more detail with just how far fetched The First to Lie was.

  • A thrilling 5 star read

The First to Lie is suspenseful thriller written by bestselling author, and investigative reporter Hank Phillippi Ryan. This is the first book I have read from this author and it did not disappoint. The book tells a provocative story of a pharmaceutical company who has developed a drug said to help couples suffering from infertility to become pregnant more easily. There are physicians who work with the company are seeing patients looking for a miracle. What these physicians aren’t telling their patients before starting treatment is that in some cases patients will have an allergic reaction which causes them to be permanently sterile. There is no opportunity for patients to give informed consent. These patients sign a form, but there is no discussion of this allergic reaction life-changing side effect. Simply put, this is completely unethical practice and certainly not out of the scope of reality. There are several characters who are undercover in trying to investigate the company about this drug. One is an investigative reporter for a news channel and another her next store neighbour and co-worker. The third character is a lawyer who hopes to sue the pharmaceutical company. Further characters are revealed behind the scenes of the pharmaceutical company, including a couple who lead the company and their children and spouses. But not everything is at it seems in the twisted, suspenseful story. It is obvious that one or more of our characters isn’t who we think they are. I do not want to give any more of the story away. It is a great discussion on the importance of health care consumers having the right and ability to be informed. All I want to say is “Wow”! If you love a suspenseful, twisted novel which will have you guessing all the way through, this book is for you. You will want to devour this book in one sitting, but I highly suggest you don’t. Read it slowly and digest it in all its magnificence. You may want to take notes. To say this is a highly engaging read is an understatement. This may be my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last. Thanks to Netgalley and Forge Books for the ARC of this book in exchange for the honest review provided here.

  • The First to Lie

The First to Lie is the latest book by Hank Phillippi Ryan. This is the first story I've read by Ms Ryan and I'm happy to have discovered her. The story is told in different points of view and some back and forth in time. I found the beginning a little confusing. This book is like the movies where you're telling the heroine not to do something and of course, they do it anyhow! I want to thank NetGalley and Forge Books for an early copy to review.

  • Ryan keeps getting better!!

Again Hank Phillippi Ryan gives us a twisted story that kept me up far into the night unable to put it down. First to Lie is a unique storyline and if you're a woman that has struggled with infertility, such as myself, you're going to see yourself a bit in this story. I definitely related to some of the characters and the storyline seems so plausible. There is a drug used to treat breast cancer (Femara) that I was prescribed to help get pregnant with. It worked for me and I have an 11 year old. Perhaps today it is used to infertility as well, at the time it wasn't. Anyways what I'm saying very wordy and in a roundabout way is Ryan gives us a story that is more than plausible. She just puts her own spin on it... and it's so good!! Her writing and the way she draws out the cat-and-mouse thrills and messes with the mind is my favorite!!

  • Hank Phillippi Ryan has done it again!

Hank Phillippi Ryan has done it again! She’s written another story full of twists and turns and suspense and surprises that will have you changing your best guess over and over. Full of characters who aren’t always who you think they are, who have strong motives to get back at Big Pharma. And as the title of this book is “The First to Lie” then you know that all of these people are going to have secrets and stories they won’t want you to know and won’t hesitate to lie when they think it’s justified. Be prepared for a thrill ride. Be prepared to meet a whole cast of characters who will make you like them, then mistrust them, then fear them. Non-stop action and intrigue start to finish. Once you start you won’t be able to put it down – I couldn’t. Thanks to author Hank Phillippi Ryan, publisher Forge Books and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of The First to Lie for my reading pleasure and honest opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it. Another great addition to your library of this author’s work.
