    Magical and Kung Fu Battles

This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier. Synopsis: Set in 1898 San Francisco, The Girl with Ghost Eyes follows Li-lin, the only daughter of Chinatown’s Daoshi exorcist. When an evil sorcerer traps her in the spirit world, her father maims himself to guide her back. With her father out of action, she takes on the sorcerer with only a peachwood sword and a sarcastic talking eyeball for aid. She must navigate Chinatown’s perilous streets, confronting Asian monsters, evil spirits, and soulstealers before the sorcerer unleashes an ancient evil that will destroy San Francisco. Review: The Girl with Ghost Eyes is an interesting alternate history of late 19th Century San Francisco. It deals with ancient Chinese folklore, and a culture striving to assimilate into a new world while clinging to their old ways. The story was interesting with several magical and Kung Fu battles. Having taken Kung Fu and Tai Chi myself, I found this exciting. The drawback is that the author chose to interrupt the action with long expositions which lessened the effectiveness. All in all, an enjoyable read.
