    Harbour master

Character portrayal good, main character very likeable. Plot interestingly complicated. Setting is stimulating.

    An Everyman's Police Detective

Overall, I found The Harbour Master a good crime drama read within the backdrop of Amsterdam. The main character grew on me, but sometimes intentionally or not, he does some rather stupid things amongst other brilliant moves. Possibly this is what the author intended to create a more realistic character. Note that there are three parts to this book which may have been previously made available separately and can cause confusion. This is now the first book of the series.

    The Harbour Master

Highly readable. Complicated but once you have read a few chapters you get into it. Police corruption and the good guy trying to sort things out. A good read.

    Recommended - better than most

I wanted to give this 4.5 stars: not in the outstanding class, but very good. The plot is rich: complicated, but no ridiculous twists. The characters are engaging; the minor ones are well drawn. The hero is not 'odd' like many; a pleasing character of strength and perseverance. The acid test: will I read another van Der Pol book: Yes.

    Great new crime writer!!

Good story, great characterization, interesting new locales. I will read next in series. European crime novels are always excellent.
