  • The Hercules Text

Being a fan of this author I was really surprised to find this book. My favorite sci-fi theme is first Contact books. Carl Sagan's book contact being my favorite of all time. So I was overjoyed to see the Jack McDevitt had done something kind of similar. I loved it. It was full of absolutely excellent ideas and really cool concepts. My only gripe was the ending. I would be lying if I didn't say I was a bit disappointed in how it ended. I would have liked more information and more resolution. It was still great. And I'm really glad I found it. Most will probably be okay with the ending. It was a terrific book. A great read.

  • The Hercules Text

Good read. Raises some very interezting philosophical, moral, and ethical questiins. This is one of several books I have read recently where tbe autor breaks the thread of the story to tell you what the characters are having for dinner. Seems to be irrelevant fill to me.

  • Dated but fair

This work reads as something dated during the eighties and even got Einstein's personal life wrong. For my taste, it was too soft on some science and too mush with the personal details, still it's easy enough to read.

  • We are not alone!

We are not alone! That is the first thing that we learned from the alien transmission. But they kept on transmitting … The Hercules Text is a somehow exciting look at how new knowledge affects us socially and philosophically. That McDevitt was able to pack so much excitement into such a story says a great deal about his skill as a writer. A favorite of mine for years, but I have just gotten to this novel. I will be thinking about its ideas for months, nay years to come.
