Well-written , engaging novel, which brings Croatia vividly to life. Effective alteration between past and present.

    Excellent Historic Fiction

This is a difficult book in that it deals with the former Yugoslavia. In a small town two hours from the sea a man named Duro tells of his life and family and friends. He doesn’t describe an all out attack. Instead it’s a small group of soldiers who camp halfway up the mountain and lob shells on the town killing people. Then latter people leave town walking carrying as much as they can. Latter people start disappearing and others loot their houses. These are all flashbacks in a modern story of a woman from England and her children who show up at a blue house near Duro’s and he works as a handyman repairing many things. The character are familiar yet act in sinister ways except Duro and the English family.
