  • Intense & entertaining

Cormac was intrigued by Emily the moment he first saw her, but he stayed out of sight for months, simply watching her from a distance. Emily, running from a truly horrific past, isn't one to trust easily, but when Danny, the owner of a local gym, decides to take her under his wing, she finds herself under the protection of a whole team of fighters — and giving up her heart to one in particular. The truth is that I wasn't at all prepared for Emily's backstory, and as soon as I figured out what it was, I put the book down. It took me two more tries to get through it, not because the story wasn't interesting or the writing was bad, but because I just really didn't want to read about something so awful. Emily's stepfather was an abusive monster, knocking her around constantly and forcing her to live in fear. And just as I'd dreaded, it soon came out that he took that abuse exactly where it should never have gone — all under the uncaring watch of her mother. Getting past that enough that I could give the rest of the story a fair shot was no easy feat. Cormac is a hulk of a man, but his true strength is in the gentleness and patience with which he treats Emily. Following Danny's cue, he looks out for her, takes care of her, and tries to make her happy. Before long, the men at the gym are a family that she never had, and Cormac has stolen her heart. Their romance is slow and sweet, and it seemed at first that it would end with a neat little happily ever after. But that monster stepfather still had it out for her, and he made a grisly reappearance just when it seemed that everything was going great for her. While the beginning of their story piqued my interest, it was the end that really made the tale. Faced with almost certain death and unwilling to lose anyone that she had come to love, Emily makes one hell of a sacrifice, establishing herself as a much stronger and more healed character than the one we first met. While I may have had some issues with some of the subject matter, The Hurricane turned out to be quite the entertaining read, and the intense drama surprised me and kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. Based on the quality of writing and the unique way in which the story unfolded, I have to say that I'll be keeping an eye out for the rest of this series. ***FicCentral received this book from Grand Central Publishing (via Net Galley) for free in exchange for an honest review.

  • It was an enteresting listen

The story is full of drama, sadness, overcoming the past and making a better life for yourself. The saddest part for me was her mother letting her stepfather do whatever he wanted to her and standing by him. They were so close before her father died and then he came along and her mother just fell apart. When most mothers would be protecting their child this mother more or less said yes beat my child and rapes her in front of me while I close the door and walk away. You can do whatever you want as long as you do not hit me just hit her. Cormac was just living day to day with no thought of tomorrow until he met Em than his life changed as he tried to better his self and make a life for her. I really loved this character he was a protector from the start he gave so much of his self. I really felt bad for him when something happened and he thought it was his fault. No one can be there 24/7. His mother was something else and I was glad to see he saw the true her. Em what can I say about her to have lived through all she had and still have faith in mankind is amazing. I think I would have had to kill the stepfather before I left town. I thought she was a wonderful character picking up her life and moving on getting an education and paying her way was outstanding. I thought the author did a great job her voice was strong and real for the characters. You could feel the emotions as the characters were dealing with the drama. I didn’t hear any background noise just a few places where the audio when from normal to a little louder. The characters emotions were all over the place and I felt she did them very well. I thought the tones were even with you knowing just what each was feeling at any giving minute. Her character voices were good you had no trouble knowing who was talking. Her male to female were nice, she has a very clear easy voice to listen to. I thought she did a good narration with a lovely voice. I thought this was a great plot but could have been made a little shorter. At times I thought not enough information had been given and at other times way too much. It wasn’t a audio I had trouble putting down and coming back to. I did want to know the ending and found it to be an interesting read. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop with her stepfather but the author keep that for later building it up to a wonderful ending. I hope he got what he so richly deserved. It was really a nice second chance story that at times was very touching. I would have liked to have known after so long where the mother stood and how she was doing. I would have also liked to have known what happen 10 years down the road with the main characters. All in all it wasn’t a bad listen I give it a 3.5 starts with a 4.5 for the narration.

  • I love Love!

Who doesn't love a hardened tough guy that melts to putty when he meets the right girl?! With a good back story to it, this book has it all.

  • She was the Sunshine in the eye of a hurricane...

Emily kept wondering why? After all she was the one running late today and I'm never late for work and I felt so terrible and on top of all that I was darn near frozen to boot. However I quickly went about topping off cups of coffee before talking to one of my regular customers; but today he wasn't sitting alone. He was a mountain of a man and he made me extremely nervous; growing up in the kind of home I came from it didn't take me long to develop certain traits. The fact I'm still using those techniques even now; especially when I found myself in socially awkward situations. As soon as my customers were gone; the girl who worked the other section started braying at me because she couldn't understand why a man like him was sitting in my section. Honestly I didn't have a clue who he was or even why he sat where he did and I really didn't have time to care. As much as I've enjoyed my job I have big and better plans for myself; which included graduating from a reputable school. Even when I was terrified beyond belief and was desperate to be a wallflower I realized I couldn't keep on living that way. Because I'm hoping not to let me history to define my bright future. My first night at my new job was almost my last because I seriously considered running for the hills. Danny never explained what kind of business he owned but then again I never really thought to ask. So here I am in a teeny tiny office which happens to be not that far from a room full of sweaty men beating on things and maybe even each other. I couldn't believe Cormac when he insisted that he was supposed to be walking me home, and I wasn't having it. Now I knew Danny meant well but seriously to give out my private information but then he played the old man card. Wow talk about guilt tripping someone Danny just played me like some grand fiddle. First of I'm not a good time girl; the party scene isn't my thing but I was willing to give it a chance. However I was done; my friend left me for the guy she liked and not knowing many other people I was ready to leave when I'd surprising heard him. Cormac.... Its pretty sad when neither one of your parents care much beyond their own selfish desires. And of course my dad was barely a footnote during my childhood then there's my mom who had her own priorities that usually didn't include me. Sometimes the best messages don't always make since until the right person delivers it then its like a total epiphany. I knew I scared Emily when we first meet however I've noticed she's slowly but surely she's become less skittish and honestly I want her to know my true intentions because I'm not going anywhere. Still I was worried that once I shared my sorrowful history with Cormac that he might look at me differently; even though he kept trying to reassure me that would never happen in a million years. I should have known the minute my mom showed up for my match that she had some hidden agenda and once she realized I wasn't falling for her act; she turned her attention towards someone else. Nope... Just no way I'm not about to let the best woman in my life think she can shove me out the door. Cormac knew I was still terrified my past wasn't quite in the past as I'd had hoped but he came up with a brilliant idea. And I'm so super happy with my new last name and the the gorgeous mountain of a man that came with it. Unfortunately I'd been to excited and preoccupied that I left my guard down when the unthinkable happens. But I'm not willing to give up because I know no matter what I can survive anything.
