  • Another group of bonded magical teens

The six main characters remain pretty two-dimensional, since they are servants of the plot. As they learn to work together to fend off the dark forces of evil threatening Earth, the story begins to challenge my ability to "suspend disbelief", which is a must when reading either scifi or fantasy. Still, I read the book in one sitting, despite the stereotypical military bullies trying to control the six students. Ammu, their Egyptian teacher, tries to protect them from the military manipulators--and in the end, the military people are left with egg on their face, since their weapons don't work against the dark creatures summoned by the students. I really liked Roman, the 11 year old named "Sketch"--he's set apart from the others by not only his age but his special ability to see what others cannot. The sections with Sketch and "Rush" (Ashton, the 17 year old gamer) are filled with fun and kindness--and they are the two who form an emotional bond with one of the "good" creatures summoned by the group, a small griffin. There's much to like about this story, and I do hope a sequel is in the works.
