Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite The Island of Apples is a work of fiction in the fantasy, mythological, and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author K. W. Gage. Written as the opening novel to the Otherworld Saga, we find ourselves on a fantastic journey suitable for middle-grade aged readers and upwards. Our protagonist is thirteen-year-old Bridget Morgan, who has never really questioned her life before adoption because her family has always been great. But when circumstances force her to discover the truth about her birth, Bridget finds herself whisked away to an incredible world where every mythical person and creature she ever read about really does exist. Otherworld is filled with magic, and Bridget belongs there. Author K. W. Gage has crafted a truly engaging and whimsical fantasy tale that will captivate younger readers and could also be a fantastic classroom read for larger groups to enjoy and discuss. One of the things which I liked about the construction of the work was the inclusion of so many different familiar figures from mythological and historical cultures around the world, which makes the world as educational as it is exciting. The magic of Otherworld makes good sense within its own lore, and the narration makes you feel as though you’re learning all these new things right alongside Bridget, which will deliver a really immersive experience to the reader. Alongside this, there’s stellar character creation, lovely new friends, and a well-arranged series of plot events, which overall makes The Island of Apples a highly recommended children’s read.
