  • Dead Lemons

Definitely a different type of book then I'm use to reading. Keeps you reading and on trying to figure out where it's taking you. I would recommend if you enjoy mysteries with a twist.

  • Sooner or later

Gripping first person narrative of a murder, and more, mystery. Conventional. So far. However. The hero is a dysfunctional paraplegic It's set on the furthest tip of the South Island of New Zealand It switches repeatedly between past and present action. And surprise surprise, there are twists from middle to beginning and back to the end. Sometimes not in that order. It has an easy to read laconic style set by the character of the narrator. As a vehicle for self examination and reconciliation with ones failings flaws and disappointments it adds something to what is a dense action narrative, it also occasionally gets in the way. As a self help book it has good intentions but kind of relies on becoming a hero, a super sleuth, a rugged survivor, a desirable sexual partner , in order to reveal the glow of self worth. Quite self centred on the hero ,if you see what I mean, which leaves most of the other players ,and to a certain extent the location, as, a bit two dimensional, support acts .But then again so it was with Philip Marlowe. A interesting and engaging read.

  • Thrilling, extraordinary writing

What a shocking, stunning debut from a writer of extraordinary talent. Finn Bell is an author I want to be reading for a long time. I read The Killing Ground (originally titled Dead Lemons) because I just happened upon a blog post written by Finn Bell. I knew if he wrote so well that I couldn’t put down a blog post I would love any novel he wrote. And I was right. The intro, the end notes, and everything in between is elegant prose yet down to earth, gritty and totally mesmerizing. It’s hard to categorize The Killing Ground and put it into a specific genre. I’ve seen it described as a blend of hard-boiled noir and rural gothic. It’s a crime thriller with organized crime and an amateur sleuth in a unique remote wilderness setting. The environment was so different than anything I have lived in or read about, but the descriptions were so vivid and complete that after a couple of chapters I felt right at home in the setting. The pacing is perfect and the words flow, making this book almost impossible to put down. Humor turns to danger and the suspense is non-stop. The characters are complex and well-developed. Not really people I want to know, but definitely people I want to know more about. I hate spoilers and don’t want to take away from the reading experience by giving away plot points, but The Killing Ground is one of the best books I have read in a long time and I highly recommend it. Thanks to the author for providing a copy for my honest review.
