    A fresh new take

They author has grown over the course of this series and has a true masterpiece with the prequel. The author has managed to take the same principle as his first book(a mage comming into his powers) and give it a whole new spin. Daniel develops many of the same abilities as mordecai did but in a completely different and interesting way. This book also pull at your heart stings with its focus on daniels relationships as well as keeping you engrossed as you eagly devour each page. I throughly enjoyed this book and the added depth it gave me to an already complete world that the other books built in my head.

Excellent prequel to the Mageborn series

I reluctantly purchased this because I didn't feel that it was necessary to go back to the beginning of the Illeniel line but, after reading all of the Mageborn and reading Thornbear, I just couldn't help it; I wanted to see what else Mr. Manning could come up with and I wasn't disappointed. Most prequel stories can be boring and slow and this book was a little slow getting started but picks up the pace fairly quickly and doesn't stop. At first I was a little confused who this Daniel Tennick is and how he fits into the Illeniel story but, as I said the story picks up and all is revealed. Another Excellent book by Mr. Manning, very glad I bought it.

    Good start

Good characterization. And the interludes with Mort and the kids actually enhance the story telling. As usual the interplay of relationships between the characters is the strong point of the story... done in the easy, "sometimes humourous/ sometimes dark" style which is a signature of this author.
