  • Just outstanding

Another magical tale with outstanding characters set in a New Orleans beautifully described by James Lee Burke. Dave Robichaud and Clete Purcell personify all that's good and bad in man. And Burke's villains are the absolute scariest anywhere. His creative descriptions of the New Orleans weather conditions are classically written. I hope he writes a hundred more novels.

  • Better with each novel

I have read most of his novels. The author captures the essence of historical Louisiana and the thought processes of Robicheaux are complex. Absolutely a must read. Suggest that new readers start with early novels and follow the life of this complex character.

  • Another exceptional novel

James Lee Burke is as good as it gets when it comes to plot, character, atmosphere and the tortured souls of damaged people. Most series lose their magic after a few efforts, but the Robicheaux books are steadfastly superb. Burke also routinely produces phrases and descriptions that are electrifying. Here, there is a series of seemingly unconnected murders, an unexpected romance for Dave, a visit from Hollywood filmmakers and the perils that Dave’s soul partner Clete Purcell. Burke keeps all the plots going and then brings them together. Fabulous.

  • A dark past

private-investigators, thriller, suspense, mystery, crime-fiction The present is the product of the past. Nowhere is this more clearly apparent than in the stories centered on Dave Robicheaux in the bayou. If you've never read any of these you should prepare yourself for the dark side of life and the calling to investigate and work for justice whether as law enforcement or private. That being said, I loved this one at least as much as any of the others and hope that he continues to write more. Can't call this an unbiased endorsement as I confess to being a Dave Robicheaux addict. I requested and received a free ebook copy from Simon and Schuster Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!

  • Not just a read; an experience.

James Lee Burke and Dave Robicheaux never disappoint: the Robicheaux novels are always exciting, and the cultural and psychological background add dimensions you won’t easily forget.
