  • A well written and superbly crafted horror story

The Only Good Indians is a well written and superbly crafted horror story which takes place in the northwestern US and has characters from the Blackfeet and Crow tribes. Four young Blackfeet men embark on a badly planned and illegal elk hunt which results in a violation of tribal values and the desecration of nature. Ten years later, an entity exacts her revenge in a chilling, suspenseful and brutal fashion. The characters are incredibly well developed given the length of the novel, and the reader develops sympathy for them. The reader also empathizes with the perspective of the entity who pursues the four men. This story has great depth in its exploration of themes of cultural identity, tradition, social justice, revenge and respect for the natural world. Horror readers will love this, but I would also recommend this book for readers of fiction in general. I can see why The Only Good Indians is receiving so much critical acclaim.

  • They always come back.

You can read The Only Good Indians and enjoy it as a supernatural suspense or as a horror novel if you don’t read/watch a lot of horror or have a low tolerance for it. Or you can dig deeper and be amazed by the cyclical nature that Stephen Graham Jones incorporates into the story in regards to violence, a person’s heritage, and the destruction of animals in nature. I read and watch a lot of horror so I wasn’t as disturbed by the gore as others. Although violence to animals is always hard for me to read/watch, so in that regard, it did make this book difficult to read at times, but I can see how it was necessary and an integral part of the story. I was pleasantly surprised how this book has stuck with me. I find myself doing or seeing something and I’ll remember a part of the book. To me that’s what makes a novel so good, when you’re still thinking about it days later. The Only Good Indians is a novel I will highly recommend to anyone looking to read something original and thought provoking or paranormal suspense/thrillers.

  • Excellent

Although this is a horror story it also gives insight into racism and discrimination that continues as main theme in the novel. Well written, provocative, excellent characters.

  • A Nightmare You Need to Experience

This story was a wild and twisting ride that felt like a descent into madness. The line between things that were really happening and things that were derranged hallucinations was so blurry, most of the events were long dead history before they were even able to sink in. I found myself time and time again, reeling, feeling like, "this cant be right". It was over long before I wanted it to be, and I think I will definitely be revisiting this wonderful nightmare.
