Fabulous character driven start to a new series.

A truly sweet romantic love affair and a fabulous start to a new series. Somewhat predictable in its storyline, but the characters make the story. When the Duke of Hartholm, her dreaded fiancé – Cyril – dies in a carriage accident, Serafina McPhee is torn between jumping for joy and putting on a respectable mask of mourning for Society’s accusing eye. But when she learns she must marry the man inheriting the Dukedom, she sets a plan in motion to keep her freedom, her privacy, and her sanity. She simply doesn’t expect her new husband to be so charming, caring, and incredibly handsome. As one of the Notorious Flynns, she hopes Raphael Flynn would eagerly accept a marriage in name only so he might continue his notorious lifestyle. Rafe Flynn isn’t happy about taking on the title of Duke of Hartholm nor the bride accompanying the title, but he is pleased the bride forced upon him by an ironclad contract is beautiful. When she offers him an arrangement, which allows him his essential freedoms other than siring an heir and spare, he eagerly accepts. What he doesn’t expect is to find his wife in name only so desirable, so intelligent, or so in need of someone to treat her as she deserves. Will a marriage built on a contract like no other survive against the turbulent emotions threatening to tear it apart or will it become a romantic marriage with love at its core? Somewhat predictable in its storyline, THE OTHER DUKE by Jess Michaels is still a sweet, romantic story with wonderful characters, both good and bad. Rafe and Serafina are a delight together, she all prim and proper as the wife of a Duke should be while Rafe, so unused to the restrictions of a title, brings a casual lightness to their activities. And their exploration of sexuality for Serafina’s benefit is downright sexy and natural. Jess writes erotic romance better than most but in THE OTHER DUKE, she brings ingénue naturalness to the scenes. The secondary characters, from the evil Dowager Duchess to the familiarity of the new Duke’s servants, and of course, Crispin – the incorrigible brother who wants his brother and best friend free to carouse with him – truly bring the story to life. While Rafe and Sera deal with a marriage filled with unexpected thrills and diversions, someone wants the new Duke gone from this world. Never a dull moment when it comes to historical romance by Jess Michaels, and her Notorious Flynns are definitely going to be a fun ride. Even though a bit predictable in its forced bride scenario, THE OTHER DUKE, book one in the Notorious Flynns series by Jess Michaels is one I highly recommend reading if you love full rich characters, a sweet love affair which blooms before your eyes, and an underlying sinister plot the lovers need to overcome if their love can flourish. Jess doesn’t disappoint and just as her other series are worth reading, so is the Notorious Flynns. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Annabelle’s story, THE SCOUNDREL’S LOVER. ***eARC provided by author in exchange for an honest and unscripted review.

    Good--but dark story.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. Am a fan of Jess Michaels books. Have read many of her earlier works. That being said The Other Duke although a good book was not an enjoyable story for me. This story was too dark for my taste.

I Loved Book 1 of the Series!

I had previously read only a novella by Jess Michaels. I found this book hard to get into in the beginning, but kept reading anyway. It turned out that I loved the story, particularly the hero of the story, Raphael Flynn. Rafe inherits an unwanted title when is much despised cousin dies suddenly in a carriage accident. He suddenly finds himself not only inheriting the title of Duke, but also a bride. Serifina, the aforementioned bride has been promised to the Duke of Hartholm since she was a small child. She had very good reason to hate her now deseased betrothed and thought herself free from marriage when he died unexpectedly. When Rafe and Serifina meet they hatch a plan of their own regarding their marriage. The best laid plans..... as they say. I received this book free from Netgalley for a honest and unbiased review.

THE OTHER DUKE by Jess Michaels

#1 in "The Notorious Flynns" series and what a beginning! I have been patiently waiting for this title and was not disappointed. Fast paced with romance, suspicion, mistrust, betrayal, a bit of suspense, and lots of passion. WOW! All any Historical Romance could want in a Romance book. The hero/heroine are both enjoyable, while, a bit predictable, they where both endearing as well as engaging. Engaging the reader in a story of desire, passion and the vulnerable of finding love in the least expected place. Meet, Raphael “Rafe” Flynn, the new Duke of Hartholm, and Serafina McPhee's, her intended’s cousin. Serafina thinks everything is fine now as her intended is dead, but atlas, things go awry, and Rafe finds himself engaged to Serafina and ready to show her how good desire and pleasure can be between a man and a woman. Well written with Ms. Michaels' usual aplomb and engaging characters. The storyline is intriguing as well as satisfying. The passion between Rafe and Serafina is passionate, and tasteful. Just when their love is beginning to bloom, trouble, comes a'calling. Someone is out to destroy the new Duke and his betrothed. A very enjoyable and satisfying read from beginning to end. I can hardly wait until the next "The Notorious Flynn" installment. Well done, Ms. Michaels! I love this author's writing and "The Other Duke" was no exception. Ms. Michaels is an amazing storyteller. I would highly recommend "The Other Duke" to any romance reader, rather Historical reader or not. A deliciously wicked tale with a few twists and turns. *Received for an honest review from the author* Rating: 4.5 Heat rating: Mild Reviewed by: AprilR, courtesy of My Book Addiction and More
