    Not Her Best Work

This is really two stories in one. The first is a wonderful tale of an old and bitter sword master living on the edge of civilization after being betrayed by the emperor he had faithfully served. A young peasant woman who has lost her family to the emperor’s tyranny appears in his exile and manipulates him into teaching her the sword so that she can gain revenge for her dead family. This part of the novel—the formation of the bond between sword master and apprentice is beautiful. The second story—the quest for revenge—strays from this tight focus and becomes more of a classic adventure story. In doing so it that spark that makes the first half so special. I am a major fan of C.J. Cherryh’s writing, but this one ultimately falls flat.

My favorite of all her books

This is mostly a coming of age story about a young hero. She forces an old hero to train her, and their adventures are amazing. There's romance, and revenge and strategy.
