    Unusual historical novel

Only around the first half of this book, first volume of a series of (so far) 8 books has anything to do with the sea, or privateering. After our poor but dishonest hero gets some prize money, and increases it by smuggling, he takes it back to northern England and gets very rich in the industrial revolution. That's really what this book and the sequels are about. It's a multigenerational family saga about how a very capable, ruthless, likeable uneducated man and his family join the English aristocracy. If you like history in your historical novels you will probably enjoy these.

    Enjoyable read

Well written and researched. Liked the period setting. Tom does seem a bit too lucky though. I am waiting for his fall.
