Characters That Truly Impact the Heart

Let me tell you about how a book might have literally saved my life. When I agreed to review this book, I was in a really, REALLY low place. Not to go into personal issues, but I was absolutely at my lowest point ever. I do not exaggerate in the least, when I say that I was ready to call it quits. Then I started Purest of the Breed. I had read The Bloodline War and loved it, one of my favorite books this year as a matter of fact, and felt an obligation to finish this commitment that I had made Tracy Tappan. Long, depressing story short.... Marissa and Dev made me laugh. I don't mean a giggle or a snort. I laughed til tears rolled and my stomach muscles cramped and begged for mercy. That shot of endorphins and joy brought me back to a sane place, so you will understand why I am now an acolyte of this series. I know many who feel the vampire trope has been done to death, BUT, I swear that you haven't had the honor of meeting the Varcolac, or else you would erase that thought from your psyche forever. This world is beyond unique and the characters are created, developed, and written to such a degree of perfection that I feel I could call them on the phone or meet them for coffee. The minutiae of everyday life is not forgotten but welcomed and used to make this world a very real place. Not only was there laughter, but there was drama, angst, heartbreak, tears, and yes lots and lots of melt your panties off romance. I would love to tell some of the secrets that make this world so special, but finding out is half the fun. I will hint that these mature Varcolac are primed and ready. You CAN learn alot from books! The dynamics between all the characters, past, present and future would be enough for me. The romance is just the jalapeno on top. (These are some hot tamales!) These Varcolac, and all there assorted brethren have absolutely captivated me with their wit, intelligence, sexiness and just plain likability. I absolutely defy you to read this book, nay this series, and not come away a happier, more balanced person. It can't be done. Do I expect The Community series to be used in therapy? Probably not, but it worked for me. I guarantee you will like this book. J.R. Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon and the others atop the PNR mountain, watch your back, there is a fast rising star and it's Tracy Tappan.

    Good sequel

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways). (This review may contain spoilers). Having read the first book in this series, I was pretty happy I already had the second book... and I had a much better feeling while I was reading this book. I liked the women, but there were times I got a bit confused with them. The ones who weren't the main characters seemed almost grouped together into one entity and there were a few who weren't actually named. It was nice to see other characters as well in this book. I really liked Alex's relationship and I liked the fact that he was a fairly interesting character and it was nice to see that the author spent quite a bit of time on his subplot. I really find it unique that the vampire-race can't actually get physical with anyone until after they're bound. It's an interesting and unique take on it and I felt it kept the relationships real, with just enough sexual tension to indicate that, yes, these two characters are strongly attracted to each other. I would like to know how the Dragons are formed. If it's a genetic thing, I would have thought that at least some of the Dragons would be physically related to each other. I really didn't like the police officer in this book. I didn't like him in the previous one, either, but he was particularly annoying in this one. There were a couple of the bad guys that I found fairly intriguing, even though I really dislike them. Not their leader, though - he's a complete jerk and I really dislike him. I can't feel any sympathy towards him... or really understand the reasons behind what he's trying to do. There were a few emotional scenes in this book and some things that really made me angry. I ran a gauntlet of emotions through this book and that's a sign of a book that really draws me in and keeps me hooked all through reading it. I definitely intend to read book three at some point in the future. I also have a short story that's set in the world as well. If you'd like a more unique take on the vampire paranormal romances... this series is it.

    Exciting

Can't wait for the next book. Exciting read, had to force myself to stop. Love the way it carries on so you have to read the next book. The history of the mom was cool too.

I can't wait for the next book!!!

I can't wait for the next book!!! This is the second book in the series, and the way this one ended, there will definitely be a third (HOORAY!!!) Tracy's books are kind of like a 2-for-1 deal: she doesn't just introduce a supporting character and then never mention it again. She gives the reader an in-depth look at the supporting character(s), almost like a novella inside of the novel. This really had me invested in the collective characters and eager to read more about them, hopefully in subsequent books. She also involved the main characters from book 1 in book 2 and even continued their story. It was like catching up with old friends, and I was SO happy! I absolutely LOVED everything that transpired between Marissa and Dev, especially their first meeting (it was pretty funny. I think you'll laugh when you read it!). His unwavering devotion to her is so endearing, and the dialogue between them truly made me FEEL. Even though Dev is a big, tough warrior, life seems to throw him a few unexpected curve balls that shatters his world around him. I really felt for him, and if Marissa didn't comfort him, I would have jumped into that book and done it myself! Similarly, Marissa is forced to deal with some unfortunate issues, which makes them a perfect couple. Not many love scenes in the book, but it really didn't need them. The actual LOVE between the characters was engaging enough to read. The story kept developing twists that kept me guessing until the end. Heck, even the last sentence of the book has me guessing about the NEXT book! I love this series because all of the males are to-the-death devoted to their mates. Once he knows who she is, he never wavers in his commitment: he doesn't ever WANT to. I love reading stories like that; where he finds his "one and only" and never lets anything come between them. This series definitely keeps getting better. I am looking forward to at least one more in the series, but I'm also very interested in reading Tracy's other upcoming books in other romance-genres, not just paranormal!

    I love this series

Good grief !!! I love this series, and hope there is more to come. What an awesome ride. Got totally sucked in from book 1, devoured this one, and now I want more !!! So…… DEV, our hero, was in the first book, and he was a secondary character in that one, and I hoped he would get a book. Marissa, our heroine, is human and has DNA that will make her compatible to mate and bear children with the Varcolac. The Varcolac are the vampires that live underground; they are more civilized than the Topside Om Rau. Although both races kidnap human females. The Varcolac woo and win their females, the Om Rau don’t. This book starts off where the last one ended. Dev and his warriors off to rescue those women. The kidnapping of Marissa and 2 other women was a little hard to read, but it brought home how different the three warring factions are. Marissa and her fellow slaves are rescued by Dev and his team. The fight scenes are fast and furious, but had moments where you would chuckle. Especially, the one liners the Varcolac would throw out. Dev felt an instant attraction to Marissa, but put it down to the smell of unattached dragon females produce. Dragon females are human women with compatible DNA that match both the Varcolac and the Om Rau vampires. All Marissa ever wanted was to have her own restaurant. And the thought of owning one in Tarana, which is the underground city in which the Varcolac live, and the Om Rau keep trying to break into, was too good to turn down. She liked the idea of maybe spending time with Dev, what she didn’t bank on , was spending FOREVER with him. And that to stay with him, meant giving up her dreams, and being bitten by a vamp! We have a lot of the original characters from the first book, so it felt more of a continuation of the whole story, rather than a new book. And we also had a few new threads added as well Both Marissa and Dev have their own issues and hang ups, and they do hamper the couple from getting together. But I liked that they don’t get down and naughty within the first few pages. Dev HAD to work at gaining Marissa’s trust. And when I mean issues I mean ISSUES!!!! (mothers who hate you, and sisters that sabotage your every dream, and wish you dead) There were the usual bad guys posturing and doing their usual sneers, and a few OMG moments. I do see a few females being taken in the future (hint hint hint at more books) So to round this up, I totally recommend this series. If you like your alpha males with a bite and growl, then The Purest of the Breed is the book for you. Oh …. When is the next one out ?
